IndexNow Explained: Does It Speed Up Indexing?

IndexNow is a free push protocol that tells Bing, Yandex, Seznam and Naver about new URLs within minutes. It's genuinely fast and genuinely free. The catch everyone needs to know: Google does not participate, so it does nothing for Google indexing.

IndexNow explained
A free push protocol for Bing, Yandex and more.

How IndexNow works

You host a key file on your domain, then send a simple HTTP POST with your URLs. That's it — no account, no OAuth, no quota negotiation. One ping fans out to every participating engine.

  • Speed: Bingbot typically arrives in 6–22 minutes.
  • Volume: ~10,000 URLs per request, no practical daily limit.
  • Setup: one text file, one HTTP request.
Which engines IndexNow reaches
Bing and Yandex yes, Google no.

The Google problem

IndexNow notifies Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver and Yep. Google is conspicuously absent. If Google is your primary traffic source, IndexNow alone does nothing for your Google visibility. Anyone implying otherwise is misleading you.

That said, Bing's share is small but real in some markets, and it's not zero. So IndexNow is a supplement, not a replacement for Google-focused submission.

IndexNow and ChatGPT Search
IndexNow can get you cited in ChatGPT via Bing.

The ChatGPT Search connection

Here's the part most guides miss: OpenAI's ChatGPT Search reads Bing's index for real-time web citations. So when you ping IndexNow, your content can become citable in ChatGPT Search within about two hours of publishing.

If you're optimizing for AI search (GEO) as well as Google, IndexNow is effectively free AI-search coverage. That's a meaningful reason to use it even if Bing's raw traffic is small.

When IndexNow makes sense
Use it for Bing and ChatGPT, not Google.

When IndexNow makes sense

  • You publish frequently and want Bing/Yandex coverage on autopilot.
  • You want your content citable in ChatGPT Search.
  • You want a zero-cost supplement to your Google strategy.

When it doesn't

  • Google is your only channel — IndexNow won't help there.
  • You expect feedback — IndexNow returns "200 accepted" but never tells you if the URL was actually indexed.

The right setup is both: IndexNow for Bing/ChatGPT, and a Google-focused push for the channel that actually pays. Notify Googlebot on publish and pair it with IndexNow for full coverage.

FAQ

Does IndexNow work for Google?

No. IndexNow notifies Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver and Yep. Google does not support it.

Is IndexNow free?

Yes. There's no cost, no API key, and no quota to negotiate. It's the highest effort-to-value ratio of all indexing channels — if you care about non-Google engines.

Does IndexNow help with ChatGPT Search?

Indirectly, yes. Because ChatGPT Search reads Bing's index, pinging IndexNow can make your content citable in ChatGPT within ~2 hours.
